6.0 Powerstroke ID

Personally, I’ve done enough research to know when a good 6.0 Powerstoke is available and, I know when one could be a possible time bomb.

Easiest identification is going to be the eight letter of the VIN will be a “P” (VT365 cubic inch, 6.0L Powerstroke, OHV, DI Turbo, V8, Diesel) and the tenth place is the year, “3“=’03, “4“=’04, “5“=’05…etc.

IF these engines are “Bullet Proofed” that they can be a reliable alternative to the 7.3 version.

There is a set of failure characteristics that tend to trend with factory 6.0’s that give it a bad reputation; Fuel Injection Module (FICM), head studs, oil cooler, EGR cooler and the water pump.

When the four out of the five are addressed (OEM oil cooler, FICM, EGR cooler and water pump) minus the head bolts the engine can be characterized as being “Bullet Proof“.

I personally feel IF all these items are addressed that the quality of ride, fuel efficiency and internal durability is as equal to or can surpass the reliability of its predecessor .
